An ATV operator from Tiny Township is in the hospital after colliding with a car on a main road.
At around 1 p.m. on August 23, the OPP responded to a call about a car travelling north on Baseline Road that hit an ATV. The female driver of the car was unharmed, while the 16-year-old man driving the ATV suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Simcoe County paramedics and Tiny Township fire services triaged him to a nearby hospital, and ORNGE ambulance services later brought him to a trauma centre in the Greater Toronto Area.
The OPP closed the road for investigation before reopening it at 3:40 p.m. They found that the ATV operator was crossing the road to move between two nearby property driveways, but he didn’t have the right of way.
“If you’re an ATV driving on a road that’s permitted in the municipality, then you have to obey the rules of the road,” Hobson says.
The OPP is waiting to speak with the car driver, and they’re currently investigating whether the ATV operator had a helmet. Hobson says wearing a helmet is a must on ATVs, and a seatbelt is also required if you’re operating a side-by-side.
“If you’re on an ATV, be alert, drive in control of the conditions, and never drive impaired,” he says.
